Best MP3 Players to Listen to Audiobooks

Best MP3 Player to Listen to Audiobooks

MP3 players have already become the best choice for audiobook lovers to listen to audio books for they are small, portable and easy to use. But in most cases, the MP3 player we are using may not be the best one for audiobooks due to different reasons. So in this article, we will discuss on some necessary things for you to consider when choosing an audiobook player while providing you a top list of what MP3 player is best for audiobooks.
What to Consider When Buying An Audio Book Player
Playback Quality
Playback quality, or sound clarity, is a basic yet important factor to decide whether an MP3 player is good or not. An audiobook player with great playback quality will make you more comfortable when listening to those spoken words. So it will always be necessary for you to try a sample audiobook to test the sound quality before buying the MP3 player.
Battery Life
Generally speaking, an audiobook will often be in hours long. Therefore, a good MP3 player for audiobooks should also be equipped with a long battery life, commonly for 10 to 15 hours in total, with which you won't be interrupted by the sudden power off of the audiobook player when you are in the middle of a good scene of the audiobook.
Storage Capacity
The storage capacity of the MP3 player is another important thing to consider if you have numerous audiobook files to put on the MP3 player. As a complete audiobook file often has a large size, you'd better to make sure your audiobook player has 4GB to 8GB capacity to store all your audiobooks.
Compatible Formats
Usually, a regular MP3 player is supposed to support some common audio formats, such as MP3, AAC, WMV, etc. Before you buy an MP3 player, you should confirm what kind of audiobook formats it's compatible with. You can download free audiobooks from online services like Overdrive, Lit2Go, Librophile, and so on to test whether the audiobooks play well on your MP3 player. But you should also know that some audiobooks are encrypted by DRM and only allowed to be played on certain selected MP3 players. Those well known DRM-locked audiobooks are sold from Apple iTunes Store and Audible.com. In order to listen to the DRM-ed audiobooks, you must either use the approved audiobook players or use some audiobook DRM removal tools, such as TunesKit DRM Audiobook Converter for Mac or Windows to remove the DRM from the protected iTunes and Audible audiobooks and convert them to supported audio formats by your MP3 player.
Bookmarking Ability
The bookmarking ability within an audiobook player is to allow you to bookmark a specific chapter or page so that you can come back later at this point without listening from the very beginning of the audiobook again. Since we can't always listen to a whole audiobook once, the basic bookmarking feature of an MP3 player is necessary and important.
Of course, there are other important factors to decide whether an MP3 player is best for audiobooks or not. The ones like price, navigating function, Wi-Fi connection, etc should also take into consideration while buying an audiobook player.
Top 5 Best MP3 Player for Audiobooks
Based on those rules for a best audiobook player discussed above, we've listed the top 5 best MP3 audiobook players for your reference.
1. Apple iPod Nano
The ease of using the click wheel (for the refurbished one) to control backward and forward while listening to an audiobook is one of the reason this MP3 player stands apart from the rest. Besides, it's in small size with a long batter life (30 hours) and large storage capacity (16GB). You can now get the new iPod nano at $149 in Apple store.
2. Apple iPod Touch
An iPod Touch is currently available at $299.00 for the 32GB and $399.00 for the 64GB at the Apple store. The greatest feature of iPod touch for audiobook is that it's able to remember the bookmarks for each book. And you can set audiobooks to play faster or slower than normal so you can hear them more quickly or slowly as you wish.
3. Sandisk Sansa
The SanDisk Sansa is a lot like a thumb drive, you can drag and drop audiobook files to it without having to install any software on your computer. Further more, it uses an expandable memory card slot so that you don’t need to rely on your computer or the Internet when you want to listen to audiobooks. So the price for a Sansa mainly depends on the storage you require, usually from $22 to over $200.
4. Creative Zen
The Create Zen works well with audiobooks from Audible.com along with NetLibrary and Overdrive. With this MP3 player, you can easily store up to 10 bookmarks at a time. It's sold at $99 for 8GB model and $139.99 for 16GB.
5. Zune HD
Among all the 5 best MP3 audiobook players listed here, Zune HD might be a little more pricey for a 32 GB Zune is selling at $348.89. But the best part is that it will automatically resume where you left off from each audiobook so there are no bookmarks needed.

Sandisk is not a good choice for audio books. It has a bug whereby after a battery re-charge the device can remain with the message "Charging" on its display after you have removed it from the re-charging system until you perform a soft boot. After the soft boot, the device exits from the "Charging" mode, but then loses the last place that you had been listening to before beginning the re-charge operation. You have to start listening at the start of the book again.

I get my audiobooks from libraries for free. 3 weeks ago I bought 2 phillips gogear raga 4 mbs. One of the raga's have been returned. The other will download audiobooks but puts the books chapters that are out of order. I have served the internet to figure out what I need do differently. Any suggestions? Also, I need to order another one for my husband. Any recommendations?
Thanks

Hi, I have found that if you look at your (book) file on your computer and change the setting to either speech or audiobook, that works for me.

Mescg Roupe is correct about the loss of bookmarks after recharging. No one reads regular books without using a bookmark. It's a simple function which Sandisk Sansas used to have, but which the newer Sport models do not. Adam Gorden's positive review about an audiobook reader with defective bookmarks is weak.

Since recently downloading Windows 10, my transfers of audiobooks from Overdrive (library free) do not reflect on my IPOD Nano; however in File Explorer, it shows it has transferred. I am not certain if it is the Windows 10 or ITunes updates that have changed my transfers to my IPOD. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thank you.

This is too simple...get out your old smart phone..rip the cds in iTunes and transfer the files to your phone..even if it's not activated ..you can still listen to the books with the music player and download a variety of players from the app store....using your home internet....after trying for about 2 weeks to get books on an mp3 player in the right format and order..a light bulb came on..either that just go buy a little cheap Tracfone..and just don't activate it..29 dollars?

I own a 4gb creative zen and I love it. I am currently looking to upgrade to 8gb (possibly 16gb) but I can't find any vendors who sell these. Are they all discontinued?

Yes, the Creative Zen's are discontinued, but you may be able to find new/used one on ebay. I have bought several, and even have a backup. I love this mp3 player for my mother, who is legally blind. I download audio books from the library using Overdrive. What's great about it, is that audio books don't disappear or stop playing after the lending period is over! I can add a bunch of books every couple of weeks, and not have to worry about them.

I see several variants of the Creative Zen - do they all allow bookmarking? Zen Mosaic, Zen Micro, Zen Vision, etc.? I have a Zen Mozaic that I love but need to replace as it has too little memory. I like having buttons that I can push w/out looking at the player - so I can Pause/Unpause by feel while driving

If you are handy, it is possible to replace the hard drive in your zen micro with a CF card. I just replaced a broken hard drive with a Kingston 32 GB 266x compact flash card I got on amazon for about $25. There are detailed instructions on line on how to disassemble the micro and how to replace the drive. My drive broke ----- oh, one big issue: you need windows XP to install firmware on the new CF card. You can't install firmware using windows 7. I'm using virtual pc running XP from windows 7. I hope I can preserve this old system, though Microsoft keeps trying to very hard replace both old systems by 10.

How do I find an audio book player I can listen to in bed without using headphones?

You can buy pillows that have speakers built into them (google "Speaker pillow"). You can also buy flat speakers that slide beneath your pillow (google "pillow speaker"). I've used both types and have found them to be comfortable and easy to use.

I like to listen to books in bed. I would like an MP3 player that has more tactile controls,, so I don't have to look at a bright screen and fiddle with an interface. I at least want bookmarking and the ability to rewind with tactile controls. Any suggestions?

One model that is not mentioned is the Transcend MP710. It works great for podcasts ( . If you turn it off, it picks up whee you left off .It also has bookmark function ( you have to pause it before adding the bookmark - they don't explain that in the manual ). the only drawback is that it has crappy headphones, so use another set.

The best mp3 player for audio books is Canyon (several models with a AAA battery). Unfortunately no longer in production.
Main features:
- You can manage without viewing
- Always tarts playback at the point of termination (even when changing batteries)
- Have a 5-speed playback (without sound distortion)
- FM radio (+ recording)
- equalizer
- Voice recorder
- Fast forward or rewind sound is heard
I had a Sandisk Sansa - bad is that it has only a three-speed playback and management is not possible without looking.
I also have Transcend 330. It has a 9-speed playback and equalizer, but both at the same time can not be used. With no viewing managing it is possible only partly.
